Good afternoon parents,
I hope all of you and your families are doing well, feeling healthy, and trying to make the best of this situation.
In band class on Fridays, we usually have Free Play Friday. It's a time for everyone to play something on their instrument that they've been working on. It's always great to see everyone try to play by themselves and to witness their positive reactions to the progress of their friends. It's something we all look forward to all week long. Sadly, we'll be missing out on another Friday together this week. I tried to schedule a Zoom meeting for the 4th and 5th grade band but it would either have to be very early or late in the day. I'm sure that hearing a saxophone solo at 8am isn't exactly the best thing for family morale right now, so let's try it another way.
If you can, please send me a short video clip (15 seconds or so) or a picture of your daughter/son practicing their instrument. I'll take the ones I receive and make them into a post for our social media. You can send them this email address [email protected]
Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can do anything to help you.
Stay safe,
Mr. Bonacorsa 🏌️

Good morning Clippers!
If you haven't already, please sign up for our class Remind. Your parents should have received a message from me already. If they did not, they can add themselves to the class by texting @45bandSMMS to the number 81010. (You can also add yourself to the class with this number). You can also add yourself to the class by scrolling down and clicking on Join Class in the 4th and 5th Grade Clipper Band Remind Widget below.
If they are having trouble, please email me at [email protected]
Today is a great day to practice your instrument! Here is the information on how to get started with SmartMusic. I have been using it myself and it is a lot of fun!
In order to use SmartMusic, you need to create a SmartMusic account and join our class using this code: RACN2-FEJQR
1. Open a Chrome browser and visit: https://admin.smartmusic.com/join
-You have to use a Chrome browser to access SmartMusic. Do not try to sign in using Safari or Internet Explorer.
2. When prompted for a class code, please enter: RACN2-FEJQR
Once you are in SmartMusic you should see that March Across the Seas as well as We're Off to See the Wizard and Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz are available as assignments you can submit for a grade. The grading is done automatically by a computer. I do get to listen to your recording and I can send you helpful feedback. Don't stress over the grade! These are extra credit assignments. I understand that not everyone will be able to access SmartMusic due to computer issues but anyone that is able to will find there are lots of fun pieces to play and awards to earn!
If everyone submits a recording, through Smart Music with the computer part playing through headphones, I can put it all together and make a band performance of it!
In case you are wondering, your instrument has a longer name than Flute or Clarinet. The instruments we have are:
C Flute, Bb Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet, Eb Alto Sax, Bb Tenor Sax, Bb Trumpet, C Trombone, C Baritone Bass Clef, Percussion, Bells.
Happy practicing!
Mr. B. 🎵
PS. The FREE flute lessons mentioned in the last letter are still available. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

While we are out of school, students should practice their instrument for at least 15-30 minutes a day. Please follow the directions below on how to signup for SmartMusic, a new digital resource, to help you practice while we are out of school.
To offer students a way of keeping up with their practicing while giving them an opportunity to learn new music, we have enrolled our school in the SmartMusic program. SmartMusic brings method books (like the Tradition of Excellence book we use), solo pieces, and even full band music right to your digital device. Students can use any device with a Chrome internet browser to search the huge library of SmartMusic selections. Once they find a piece they like, they can play along with their instrument, click track, full band, or piano accompaniment. Students can also record themselves and submit recordings to their teacher for a letter grade.
Kellenberg already uses this excellent resource and we hope that you will find it fun and engaging for your child.
